MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines brought in another champion coach to revive its women’s volleyball program.
UP tapped longtime La Salle deputy Benson Bocboc as head coach, replacing Oliver Almadro, who will continue his role as the university’s volleyball program director.
Bocboc served as assistant to legendary La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus from 2016 to 2024. He also called the shots as interim coach of the the F2 Logistics in the Premier Volleyball League in 2002 following his near-decade deputy stint.
“We had an opportunity to bring together two champion coaches, and we just took advantage of it,” Bo Perasol, the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development director, said in a mix of English and Filipino.
“With coach Boc on the bench, coach O (Almadro) overseeing everything, and of course, the continued support from [Frank Lao of main backer Strong Group Athletics], we’re looking forward to the bright future of UP volleyball.”
The Fighting Maroons, who finished at the bottom with a 1-13 record in the last UAAP season, will aim for a better showing under Bocboc with a roster led by Nina Ytang, Nica Celis, Irah Jaboneta, and promising standouts Kianne Olango, Yesha Noceja, and Jothea Mae Ramos.
Almadro, a former champion coach with Ateneo, will focus on bringing top recruits over to Diliman.
UP also retooled its men’s volleyball team, with Vip Isada stepping aside for new head coach Carlo Cabatingan. – Rappler.com
