MANILA, Philippines – The shear line is bringing moderate to intense rain to nearly two dozen provinces in Southern Luzon, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas on Sunday, December 1.

The shear line refers to the point where cold air from the northeast monsoon or amihan converges with the easterlies or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued the following rainfall advisory for the shear line at 11 am on Sunday:

Sunday noon, December 1, to Monday noon, December 2

  • Heavy to intense rain (100-200 millimeters): Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon
  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Laguna, Batangas, Palawan, Marinduque, Masbate, Aklan, Capiz, Antique, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran

Monday noon, December 2, to Tuesday noon, December 3

  • Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm): Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes

PAGASA warned the public that floods and landslides are likely, especially in hazard-prone areas.

Other areas in Calabarzon, Bicol, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas, as well as Metro Manila, Bulacan, Negros Occidental, and Cebu, are also seeing scattered rain and thunderstorms due to the shear line on Sunday.

ALSO ON RAPPLER

Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon itself is bringing light rain to Northern Luzon — particularly Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and the Ilocos Region — and the rest of Central Luzon on Sunday.

In addition, the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is causing scattered rain and thunderstorms in the Davao Region, Soccsksargen, Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Palawan.

The ITCZ is a belt near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere meet.

As of 2 pm on Sunday, there were no low pressure areas or potential tropical cyclones being monitored inside or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

PAGASA expects one or two tropical cyclones to enter or form within PAR in December.

The country’s last tropical cyclone was Super Typhoon Pepito (Man-yi) in mid-November. – Rappler.com
