CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines – Civil society groups have filed two impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte since Monday, December 2, accusing her of graft, corruption, and violating the Constitution.

The complaints include allegations of mismanagement of confidential funds, bribery, and betrayal of public trust, with specific charges related to her failure to account for public funds, involvement in extrajudicial killings, and threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife Liza, and Speaker Martin Romualdez. The complaints call for Duterte’s accountability for actions during her time in various government roles.

As Congress faces pressure to address the complaints amid limited time, legal experts are weighing whether the impeachment bid can succeed.

Former Cagayan de Oro vice mayor Antonio Soriano, a lawyer, gives his insights in this discussion with Rappler Mindanao bureau head and editor Herbie Gomez in this episode of Rappler Talk. Soriano is also the convenor of Citizens’ Watch for Good Governance in Cagayan de Oro.
